Our Inception
Seeds of Light came into being in the year 2000, when its founder, Leslie Temple-Thurston, a South African who lives in the United States, was deeply affected by learning about the plight of AIDS orphans in South Africa. Horrified and alarmed by the skyrocketing statistics, Leslie’s heart was broken wide open, and she knew she had to do something. She felt called to create an organization that would work in whatever way necessary to make a difference.

Who We Are
We are a group of people, primarily volunteers, who believe that love is the most powerful force in the universe and that through the power of love anything is possible. We fully believe what Einstein said: that a problem cannot be solved from the level at which it was created. We all hold a similar passion for giving, and we have chosen to collaborate and serve humanity in any way that we feel can make a difference during this difficult time of global transformation. We are becoming increasingly aware of the inevitable truth that humanity must create radical change on a much larger scale if our biosphere is to survive.

Our Objectives
The awareness that the world is going through far-reaching transformation right now is guiding us, and we see that humanity has entered a dangerous time as human and global systems die and are reborn. We must all contribute to the designing and implementing of new systems to replace those that are dysfunctional or obsolete. We see and understand that if this does not happen, humanity could slide dangerously close to self-destruction. And we see, too, that if enough people are willing to show up, get involved and begin planning for radical change, we can learn from our mistakes, modify the way things work, and create a new future together.

We believe that the systems that run the human world will be undergoing a shifting of their outmoded structures, inevitably moving towards a vast and fundamental re-organization of the kind of consciousness that gave rise to them. We know that it is up to individual people to choose to become proactively involved in creating a new kind of consciousness. This will have to be a higher, more far-seeing consciousness that can vision and replace the old, outdated structures.

A Brief Look at the Evolution of our Projects
Seeds of Light has been very involved since 2000 with starting small projects and building our strength as we gained experience. We have done many projects in the intervening years. We share only the few on this website that are still ongoing, as well as a few of the principles we have learned to follow. None of us had experience in the humanitarian arena when we began our work, and so this has been a journey for us of growing through experience.

We have moved from directly supporting orphans' homes to creating a wide variety of sustainable empowerment projects in marginalized communities. These include projects such as: drilling wells, creating sustainable vegetable gardens, HIV/AIDS education, skills trainings, computer programs and a music program. Our current commitment is to study an impoverished community, discern why it is out of balance and work towards uplifting it. We believe that only through love and by uplifting the consciousness and wellbeing of the people can we hope to offer permanent assistance. We have found that only by helping people to help themselves can true change and sustainability occur.
